Charlotte families have a new holiday tradition to look forward to! Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is bringing the beloved 1964 Rankin/Bass classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, to life on stage with a magical, larger-than-life musical that’s perfect for kids of all ages.
The production features all the characters fans know and love—Rudolph, Hermey, Clarice, Yukon Cornelius, Sam the Snowman, the Misfit Toys, and the towering Bumble. Youth performer Tilly McDaniel stars as Rudolph, leading audiences through the reindeer’s journey from misfit to hero.
With 18 classic songs by Johnny Marks, including favorites like “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” “We’re a Couple of Misfits,” and the iconic title song, this musical captures the spirit and charm of the original stop-motion film.
The show’s design is nothing short of magical. Scenic Designer Anita Tripathi created an oversized set to make the characters feel even smaller and more whimsical, while Lighting Designer David Fillmore turns every scene into shimmering holiday magic. Costume Designer Kahei Shum McRae brings the characters to life with intricate handcrafted details, including felted textures, swirling motifs, and 3D-printed reindeer noses.
Audiences will be wowed by life-sized puppets and larger-than-life characters, from Sam the Snowman at 158 inches in circumference to the 12-foot-tall Bumble. The Misfit Toys—including Cowboy on an Ostrich and Charlie-in-the-Box—also make their stage debut in fun, interactive ways.
Rudolph and Hermey will even appear in the Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade performing “We’re a Couple of Misfits,” marking Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s first parade appearance since before the pandemic.
Directed by Christopher Parks, with choreography by Jennifer Poarch and music direction by Matt Primm, this 60-minute production is full of heart, humor, and North Pole magic—including, yes, Rudolph taking flight!
For families looking for a festive outing this holiday season, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer promises a memorable experience that will delight audiences of all ages.
